Siouxniqua Smith

A former U.S. Marine and rehabilitation disability counselor, Siouxniqua Smith dedicated her life to helping others overcome adversity. Then in 2009, the caregiver became the patient.

Diagnosed with kidney failure, she leaned on her faith while spending six years on dialysis and the transplant waiting list.

At first, doctors at Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville could not identify what caused Siouxniqua’s kidneys to fail. Years later, she learned her illness was likely linked to contaminated water exposure during her military service.

In August 2015, Siouxniqua received a lifesaving kidney transplant from a grandmother whose family chose organ donation after her death.

“During an incredibly sad time for this family, they thought of others, and I benefited from their generosity,” she said. “I promised them I would honor this gift.”

Today, Siouxniqua shares her story to encourage organ donation and inspire hope.

“I got a good kidney that has allowed me to live my best life,” she said. “Some patients aren’t so lucky, and I can’t forget about them. Because I’m OK. I’m absolutely OK.”
